Edinample Castle Automated Gates with KEY Underground Automation
Original Gates Reworked with Modern Automation, Safety and Access Control
KLR Design™ completed this specialist automated gate upgrade at Edinample Castle, retaining the character of the original gates while introducing modern automation, access control and safety features.
The finished installation combines traditional gate styling with a modern KEY underground automation system, Comtel Millennium 4G intercom, cloud app access, Optex vehicle detection, safety photocells and KEY access fobs.

The Client's Requirement
The project required a careful gate upgrade that respected the existing entrance while adding the convenience, safety and control of a modern automated gate system.
Rather than replacing the original gates completely, the goal was to retain and rework them, upgrade the hinge setup, and install a professional automation and access control system suitable for the property.
The KLR Design Solution
KLR Design removed and reworked the original gates and coatings before adapting the post mountings for new gate hinges.
This allowed the original gates to be retained while making them suitable for modern underground automation.
The system was then upgraded with KEY underground automation, safety devices, a Comtel Millennium 4G intercom with keypad and cloud app access, an Optex vehicle exit detector, 2 pairs of safety photocells and 10 KEY access fobs.
HERITAGE REWORK
Reworking the Original Gates
A key part of this project was preserving the character of the existing gates.
KLR Design carried out the removal and reworking of the original gates and coatings, helping prepare them for a modern automated setup.
The post mountings were also reworked to suit new gate hinges, allowing the gates to operate correctly with the upgraded automation system.
AUTOMATION
KEY Underground Automation System
The gates were automated using a KEY underground automation system.
Underground automation is ideal for projects where a clean and discreet finish is required, as the automation equipment is positioned below ground rather than using visible above-ground arms.
For a character property such as Edinample Castle, this allowed the entrance to retain its traditional appearance while benefiting from modern automated operation.
INTERCOM & APP ACCESS
Comtel Millennium 4G Intercom with Keypad and Cloud App Access
The installation included a Comtel Millennium 4G intercom with keypad and cloud app access.
This gives the property a flexible access control setup, allowing visitors, authorised users and gate access to be managed more conveniently.
The keypad provides access at the entrance, while cloud app access adds a modern layer of control for managing the gate system remotely.
VEHICLE DETECTION & SAFETY
Optex Vehicle Exit Detector and Safety Photocells
The system included an Optex vehicle exit detector, helping vehicles leave the property more conveniently.
KLR Design also installed 2 pairs of safety photocells as part of the automated gate safety setup.
These safety devices help support safer gate movement by detecting vehicles or obstacles near the gate area.
ACCESS FOBS
KEY Access Fobs
The project included 10 KEY access fobs for authorised users.
Access fobs provide a convenient way to control entry without relying solely on keypad codes or app access.
These fobs can also be supplied in different colours to suit client preferences, helping make access management clearer and more practical.

The Final Result
The completed installation gives Edinample Castle a secure, practical and carefully upgraded automated entrance.
The original gates were retained and reworked, while the automation, intercom, vehicle detection, photocells and access fobs provide the convenience and control of a modern gate system.
